School Board of education members?

Just curious and want to get some feed back from you all. I notice in some states that school Board of Education (BOE) members is not required to have a college degree. In my area, some board members do not have anything higher than a high school diploma and these individuals are the boss to the school superintendent who has a either a masters or a doctorate degree. I spoke to a teacher not to long ago and she indicated that when a certain board member comes to her classroom to observe, she really doesn’t pay the member any attention because she (the board member) does not know what she is looking for as far as curriculum goes. This board member has a high school diploma but has been out of high school about 40 years and never worked in the school system. What are your thoughts on this issue? Do you think school board members should have a college education and/or experience working in a school setting?

Yeah, they should at least have experience working in a school. If your school district elects its board members instead of having them appointed by the mayor or whoever, you can make it a campaign issue. Otherwise you can try to get the city council or state legislature to set minimum qualification requirements if they appoint board members.

Will universities still have Humanities fifty years from now?

The university I now attend does not have a single philosophy major and so the only remaining philosophy professor is left teaching the intro courses for General Education credits. Before long, will this even be considered “cost efficient” by college administrators?

The key word is “for profit” I have taught at schools that do not require your specified courses. This is not a time for humanities, it is the information age. Get money age. How many humanities majors make the top 1000 in rich people. And that is what the current generation is about:Computers and money.
