Admission to the California bar with a felony (residential) burglary conviction… possible?

Hi there!
At age 18, I was stupid enough to commit a serious crime of moral turpitude. I plead No Contest to a felony burglary offense and got 3 years probation. I am now 22 and have successfully completed the probation terms. I’ve been gainfully employed, finished my undergraduate degree in Economics, and have been accepted to UC Hastings, UCLA, and Santa Clara University law schools.
I have also been active in my community by volunteering and can provide multiple good references of rehabilitation.

Before starting my education, I would like to know if I even have a chance of getting admitted to the California bar – or any state bar for that matter.

Thank you in advance for your help.

-Samuel

Sam,

I wouldn’t risk it. Law school is a serious commitment of time and financial resources. Even without a felony, it’s very, very difficult to get a job out of law school – even a school like UCLA. With no guarantee that you’ll be admitted, it’s a poor career choice especially this close in time to the offense. At graduation, you’re going to be only 7 years beyond the offense and most of that time was spent in school. I doubt that’s going to be enough to convince the bar examiners that you should be admitted.

It’s your life and it’s your money but I think that if you go to law school at all, you should put it off for a number of years. At the very least, you might consider contacting the bar examining commitee to see whether you could meet with someone to review your situation and give you some advice.

Good luck to you, whatever you decide.
